So, What the Heck is a Core Volunteer?

Have you thought about volunteering with Austin Creative Reuse, but unsure whether or not it’s for you? Below, you’ll find an FAQ of one of our most common types of volunteers - core volunteers.

What is a core volunteer?

A core volunteer is someone who makes the magic happen at ACR! They are a growing community of people dedicated to supporting our mission with their time and varied talents.

What makes a core volunteer different from a community volunteer?

Core volunteers have completed some extra training and are much more self-led in their volunteering. This means they can volunteer any time the center is open, rather than attending specific, pre-scheduled sessions. They can also do volunteer projects from home, or take part in special volunteering opportunities, like helping with workshops, or focusing on a particular item or section.

What do core volunteers do?

Core volunteers process donations, teach classes, represent ACR at community events, and even lead other volunteers! You can choose to specialize in a particular area, or dabble around in whatever suits your fancy on a particular day. You are never obligated to do something you are not interested in, so you can really tailor your volunteer experience to what you want it to be.

What are the requirements of a core volunteer?

Core volunteers are asked to volunteer at least 24 hours every quarter (about 8 hours a month). You can complete those hours in-center, from home, or during volunteering events! Because our requirement is quarterly, there is extra flexibility if you have a busy work schedule or vacation planned.

What do I have to do to become a core volunteer?

It’s pretty simple! First, fill out a short application. Then, you’ll be invited to an hour-long in-center orientation, which are held once or twice a month.  After you attend orientation, you’ll complete a background check, create a login for our online portal, and you’ll be all set!

Sounds easy enough, right? Then what are you waiting for!? Join the ACR family of volunteers today!
