Volunteer Spotlight: Meagan Combs

Our volunteers make the wheels turn here at Austin Creative Reuse. As often as possible, we love to celebrate the amazing people that choose to donate their time to make reuse dreams come true!

This month, we are spotlighting our A+ volunteer facilitator, Meagan! Meagan is a core volunteer who leads fabric rolling once a week, and we could not be more grateful for her! As a dedicated environmentalist, she loves spreading reuse awareness and reducing waste as a volunteer at ACR. She’s currently a student at UT, and hopes her studies will lead her to a career helping the environment. Her kind demeanor is always a delight to have at the center, and we love having her a part of the volunteer family!

Learn more about Meagan below!

What motivates you to volunteer?

I have been volunteering for as long as I can remember, and everytime I just enjoy it. I love meeting new people and finding different ways to connect. I like that volunteering really just feels like a social event, but at the same time I get to give back to my community.

Why ACR?

When I first moved to Austin, I was looking for some environmentally focused volunteering and I came across ACR. I came here once and I just kept signing up because I love the mission to help the environment but also to encourage creativity.

How long have you volunteered with ACR?

I started volunteering with ACR in September or October of 2022, and I just never left!

Are you more into the arts aspect of ACR or the conservation aspect and why?

I am most interested in ACR’s conservation aspect because before volunteering here, I didn’t really realize how many craft supplies are bought and then disposed of. I also admire how much waste is deferred from the landfill.

What do you enjoy the most out of volunteering at ACR?

I love the atmosphere of ACR, most of the time it’s fun and relaxing to volunteer at ACR. Everyone who works and volunteers here is always kind and welcoming!

Where else have/do you volunteer?

My first time volunteering was at Fort Concho, which is a historic landmark in my hometown. I volunteered there from when I was 12 until I graduated high school. Since then, I have volunteered with the Green Society at UTSA and with Keep Austin Beautiful or the Austin Parks Foundation.

What do you do for work?

I do not have a job at the moment because I want to fully immerse myself into my studies. I am currently undeclared at UT, but I hope to become part of the Environmental Science Program with a focus in geography.

What other hobbies or interests do you like to spend time on?

I love fashion! I love to go thrifting and find unique pieces and style them in a million different ways. I think it's a fun way to express myself.

Are you from Austin? If not, where are you from?

I’m from San Angelo, TX; it's a small west Texas town.

Do you have any pets?

I have a cat in my hometown, her name is Stinky, it's short for Tinkerbell.
