Artist Spotlight: Rowan from Pretty Kitty Clothes

Ever wondered how a casual hobby can turn into a booming business via TikTok? For this month’s artist spotlight, we chat with the talented mind behind Pretty Kitty Clothes, a brand known for its unique fabric chokers and trendy accessories!

When did you start making accessories?

I've always sewed since high school but I didn't start selling or making things seriously until the pandemic and by then I was about 17. I started showcasing my work online on platforms like TikTok and eventually grew an audience. The moment I started posting the fabric chokers, my business blew up and I finally found my customer base.

Which aspect of creating is your favorite?

My favorite part has to be the problem solving/learning aspect. Each new creation comes with a new set of problems to work around and new skills to learn.

Where do you get your inspiration?

My inspiration in different ways, my biggest being my own closet and figuring out what I'm missing for an outfit. I also find inspiration from antique stores. The 60s-70s is my favorite era of fashion. And finally, I find inspiration in seeing what my friends and peers are drawn to. They all have such unique and different styles and taste for art.

What is your preferred way to engage with your audience?

Most of my audience is online but the few times I can talk to them in person is always a treat. I love meeting the people who enjoy my work because it can be hard to grasp who my market is when it's all online.

How does reuse play a part in your creativity?

Reuse has always been a great way to find unique fabrics or supplies I might never have found at large stores. It helps prevent me from becoming pigeon-holed into making one piece over and over again. It is also a more affordable way to create art. The affordability gives me more room for mistakes and less afraid to make mistakes.

What compels you to donate to ACR?

Donating to ACR has been my favorite way to donate craft supplies because I know it has a greater chance at being used by another artist rather than the small chance at bigger thrift stores. I know ACR will appreciate it more and give it a better chance.

Do you have a favorite ACR find? How did you use it?

My favorite ACR find is my giant thread storage display. It holds more than enough thread for my sewing machine and doesn't take up much space.

Where can we find out more about your work?

You can find my work on my Instagram and TikTok: @prettykittyclothes and on my website: www.prettykittyclothes.com
