How-To: Make a Vinyl UFO

Our Program Coordinator, Molly, strikes again! Follow this out-of-this-world tutorial she made using this month’s Reuse & [Re]Think material of the month, vinyl records, and make your very own 100% reuse flying saucer.

Pull apart two beads and put hot glue on the exposed elastic. Hold apart until dry. Repeat with the 2nd bead, making sure not to stick the 2 beads together. once it is dry, cut the elastic between the 2 beads to create a secure chain. On one side of the chain, glue several beads together to create a stiff string, like the one shown above.

Make sure the string is the correct length for your clear cup/force field. To shorten, use the same technique from step 1 on the side that is still flexible. Glue your creature to the flexible end.

Glue your string to the inside of the clear flute or cup/force field. You’ll have to work fast! I put a generous amount of hot glue on the stiff string of beads and used tweezers to push them down the flute quickly.

Glue rhinestones to one container (these are the UFO’s windows!) and glue the container to the record.

Attach the other container to the other side of the record, then glue the force field to the bottom.

This is when you should paint! I painted the base of the flute so it looked like an extension of the UFO. You can add as many details as you’d like!

We hope you enjoyed this tutorial! Show us the UFO you make by tagging us @austincreativereuse on Instagram and/or TikTok. Happy creative reusing!
