Staff Spotlight: Avery Ward

Each month, we highlight one of our incredible staff that makes the magic happen here at Austin Creative Reuse. This month, it’s Fabric Coordinator, Avery Ward (she/her)! Avery is the second paid staff person to ever work in ACR’s fabric department, and is our first Fabric Coordinator. She started out as a volunteer and we quickly recognized the talent that she brought to the organization. Next time you’re in the center, check out her signature, killer fashion, and be sure to thank her for keeping you stocked in beautiful textiles!

How did you find Austin Creative Reuse?

During the first lockdown of the pandemic, through my mom, and also luck.

What’s your favorite part about working at ACR?

The meaningful friendships I have been able to build with staff and with volunteers. First dibs on fabric also doesn’t hurt.

Are you an artist, crafter, or maker? What mediums do you work with?

I do a lot of writing and working with different textiles. I like to make anything that I can wear or carry with me.

What do you do when you’re not working at ACR?

I am usually at one of my other jobs or in class. I also watch my roommates play animal crossing and a lot of karaoke.

What’s the craziest thing you found in donation mountain?

Recently we found a lock of hair inside of a stack of vintage lace. Also a cape and suspenders covered in dried glue and beans.

About Avery:

Avery volunteered at community fabric rolling for about 6 months before applying and becoming the first Fabric Coordinator at ACR. She likes writing and making things that people can wear. She is currently in school to become an Art Therapist and hopes to eventually work with other people in recovery.
