Make: DIY Snuffle Mat

Learn how to make a no-sew snuffle mat for your pup(s)! These are great if you want to keep your dog quietly stimulated during the day when it’s too hot to go outside for a walk. Plus, the fleece is soft on their sweet little noses!

Note: For medium/larger dogs, extend the measurements in this tutorial depending on how big you’d like the mat to be. This 13”x13” mat was perfect for a 10lb dog.

Materials:

  • 3 rolls of fleece fabric remnants

  • Ruler

  • Rotary Cutter & Mat

  • Scissors (if above not available)

Instructions:

1. Cut out a 13”x13” square of fleece for your base.

2. Cut a small slit every ½”-1” in rows.

3. This is what it will look like once you’ve finished.

4. Cut out 1”x6” strips from the remaining fleece remnants. You can use different colors to make a pattern or use all the same color. Make approximately 150 strips.

5. Starting with the outside border slits, run a strip through the hole and then tie it together.

6. When you have the border of the mat finished, start filling in the inside. These strips will need to run through two holes/slits that are side by side (see pencil in image for a visual representation of this). Then tie it together just as you did with the outer edges. Keep going until the whole mat is filled in.

7. And you’re done! This is what the front and back should look like when you’ve finished.

8. Now for the best part! Hide some small treats or kibble and feel the serotonin flow as your dog happily sniffs their treats out to crunch on. Whenever the mat gets too dirty, you can just toss it in the wash!
