Staff Spotlight: Kerry Coward

This month, we shine the spotlight on our incredible Retail Manager, Kerry Coward (he/him). But let's be honest, "manager" hardly does him justice! Continue reading below to learn more about the multifaceted talent that he is.

How did you find Austin Creative Reuse?

I was laid off from my previous job and my wife found a job posting for Ops Mgr on LinkedIn - Before that I had not heard of ACR. So happy my wife found y'all. Love nonprofits and love ACR's mission.

What’s your favorite part about working at ACR?

All the fabulous people I have met, and all the learning opportunities that are available. After being stuck at home thru Covid and a WFH job, it's good to see my social skills haven't completely gone to hell.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve found donated to ACR?

I love vintage things & collectors items, and I like all things animals (especially rabbits and cats). I also like history and old maps. That said I can't think of the most interesting thing I have found donated.I tend to find everything unique in its own way.

Are you an artist, crafter, or maker? What mediums do you work with? What kinds of arts and crafts do you like to do?

I have always been a performer. I began with singing. I have a music degree in voice. However, currently, acting is my main artistic medium. I enjoy tinkering with things, especially if they are broken, to see if I can fix them. I used to draw house plans as a nerdy little kid. I have also tried painting, sketching, photography, piano, guitar, conducting, and I love percussion.

Kerry performs “Mister Cellophane” from the musical Chicago at Don't Tell Mama NYC last October.

What do you do when you’re not working at ACR/what other hobbies do you have?

When I am not auditioning for things, I am busy being President and Treasurer of a nonprofit community theatre in Round Rock, plus I am a volunteer/member of Taylor Pride. Last Saturday (12/2) I walked alongside the Taylor Pride float in the city's Christmas Parade. I also listen to a lot of music, and my wife and I watch a lot of television and movies, and go to lots of concerts. And we travel - a lot! And I am a huge Miami Dolphins fan. When I retire I am planning on opening an eBay store.

Do you have any children or pets?

I have one daughter, Julia, and one cat, Oliver.

Are you from Austin? And if not, where are you from?

I was born and raised in Austin. Although after high school, in 1863 [lol], I moved out of state to go to school and ended up living away in several places, for quite some time; in Winston-Salem, NC, NYC, Phoenix, and San Diego. However, after my daughter was born, I moved back to Texas.

How can people get in touch with you or keep up with what you’re doing?
