Artist Spotlight: Lauren Beach

Each month, we highlight one of the talented makers in our reuse community. For December, it’s Lauren Beach (she/her)! Continue reading to learn more about how vintage linens are her muse, sustainability her anthem, and community craft swaps her jam.

When did you start making clothing?

I took costume design in college but wasn’t the most dedicated student.  I actively started making my clothes and clothing for my 3 kids within the past two years. I learned to crochet as a preteen and picked it back up around 12 years ago.

Which aspect of creating is your favorite?

Creating is my me time; it’s time for my mind to calm down and focus on only what’s right in front of me.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I’m mostly inspired by vintage linens and patterns. I have quite a collection of vintage sheets, table cloths and curtains that I use to upcycle clothes. I also have beautiful vintage crochet magazines and patterns that I’ll never get rid of.  I like to find inspiration by following small indie pattern designers too. There are so many less known designers that are leading the way for more sustainable clothing and putting a focus on upcycling.

What is your preferred way to engage with your audience?

I found so many creative humans on Instagram. The artist community is very welcoming and inspiring and supportive. I started @atxcraftswap on Instagram to connect with local artists in person.

How does reuse play a part in your creativity?

I love using Upcycled textiles and yarn when possible. Our 5 person household thrifts, makes or swaps 90% of our clothing.

What compels you to donate to ACR?

Keeping usable items in circulation and out of the trash is important to me.

Do you have a favorite ACR find? How did you use it?

I scored 2 yards of uncut black linen a few months ago! I haven’t used it yet but it will be loved and used for sure.

Where can we find out more about your work?

I share all of my makes on Instagram @lollyreneecreates and craft swap info @atxcraftswap. Our next swap is January 20th!
