Staff Spotlight: Syd Smith

Each month, we highlight one of our incredible staff that makes the magic happen here at Austin Creative Reuse. This month, it's Reuse Specialist, Syd Smith (they/them)! Syd started off as a fabric rolling volunteer and was instantly hooked. They're also a familiar face at our reuse markets, selling their scrunchies, embroidery, and more.

Look for their iconic green hair the next time you're in the center and make sure to show them any frog-themed items you find. 🐸

How did you find Austin Creative Reuse?

By a friend of mine posting on Instagram and bragging about the cheap supplies she got!

What’s your favorite part about working at ACR?

My favorite part is seeing the unique items that get donated! There’s some really fun things that I never would have guessed would come it.

Are you an artist, crafter, or maker? What mediums do you work with?

Yes! I’m a seamstress who mainly focuses on accessories and the occasional dress! I love all things frilly, lacy, and old.

What do you do when you’re not working at ACR?

When I get home, i’m either watching Wife Swap or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, reading, or taking care of my MANY very spoiled frogs, lizards, and cats.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve found in donation mountain?

A couple months ago we found a very old recipe book from what seemed like the early 1900s. It had recipes on how to cure “The Vapors” and “The Plauge”. Maybe it was fake but it was still really fun to look through!
