Artist Spotlight: Devon Lambert

Get ready to meet Devon Lambert, who turned a layoff into a launchpad for their 3D printing business! We invite all aspiring makers and eco-conscious consumers to follow along as we interview and find out more about Devon’s love for geek culture and aesthetics and how sustainability plays a part in it.

When did you start making art?

I started 3d printing just over a year ago. I've always wanted to get into 3d printing but thought the costs would be prohibitive. Then I was faced with a layoff, which gave me time to explore new options for my career / income. I researched 3d printing and landed on it as a viable option to start a side hustle AND fulfill my passion for geek culture.

Which aspect of creating is your favorite?

I enjoy coming up, and finding, art / products that really resonate with my customers, but more importantly, they resonate with me. If I think that they are cool then I have a high degree of confidence that my target customer will too. So I just go with my gut and get to printing.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Since I am primarily 3d printing designs that are made by others, it's really more about finding designs that I love. For instance, the first time I saw a dragon by the designer Cinderwing3d, I was immediately enamored by the detail and the color options. I fell deep into the rabbit hole from there and wanted to find more of her designs to print. But I don't stop there, I also try to explore products that are both geeky AND have some sort of functional use. This is why I love the designs created by Holoprops. They are the perfect Geek aesthetic for my desk.

What is your preferred way to engage with your audience?

Outside of the main blog for my business I use Tiktok a lot. The quick hit video format is more manageable given my time right now. However, I do plan to increase my output on Instagram as well. It's really a matter of finding an easy way to produce video content and get it out quickly.

How does reuse play a part in your creativity?

I love finding out ways to make 3d printing more sustainable. Right now, it's easy enough to make the decision to use upcycled / recycled filament. However, I'd love to expand to making my own recycled filament some time in the not too distant future. The cost is high, but it feels necessary for our planet and would be a great set of tutorials for others.

What compels you to donate to ACR?

I am a huge fan of the work that is done at the ACR. If someone can donate goods to ACR then that's one less thing that's being dumped into a landfill somewhere. My first time walking the aisles of ACR and realizing that I can upcycle paper, storage containers and yes, even filament, I was blown away.

Do you have a favorite ACR find? How did you use it?

I found these bronze, and silver, key rings that I've been using to make keychains out of. 100 of them costs me less than $10. I could probably find a deal that's close to this on Amazon but this way I get to do my part to keep that waste out of some landfill.

Where can we find out more about your work?

https://geekyinc.com. This is the main blog / site. Also, as I mentioned above, you can find some of the latest videos on my products on TikTok.
