Make: Collage (aka Sav’s Silly Art Tutorial)

Hi, hi and welcome to Sav’s Silly Art Tutorial (SSAT- like the SAT, but not hard).

My favorite art is taking cool things I find and throwing them together, so this is a generalized explanation of how I do that.

STEP 1: Gather tools & supplies

I always need scissors and glue of varying types- I prefer to have a liquid glue and a glue stick on hand. I also find exacto knives really helpful for cutting out complicated shapes. It is best to also use some sort of plastic cutting mat for that.

For my supplies, I used a book of stickers, some scrapbook paper, some handmade paper, tissue paper, new newspaper, and vintage newspaper. In my second gathering of supplies, I found a vintage magazine, daisy stickers, dried moth wings, and various small paper things that I found at ACR - images of mushrooms, square paper pieces, and a ballerina.

STEP 2: Cut things up!

Find words and images that scratch your brain itch. Now is also a good time to decide on some sort of background, if you want one. I opted to tear up pieces of colorful paper by hand and arrange them in a way that felt good at that moment.

 STEP 3: Putting pieces together

After I cut up a lot of things that seemed interesting, I played around with how they could fit together. I gave people flowers for heads and 3D things *ripped paper, dried flowers, and a dried moth* for their clothes. It was around this time (and in STEP 4) that I gave my supplies another dig-through to find more things to add.

STEP 4: Full layout

Play around with how the pieces can fit together even more. I play with the layout quite a bit, but usually keep it close to how it started - I don’t think too hard about it, or any part of collaging. Just throw things together and see how it feels.

Then, this is the finished product! Hopefully, it's a reflection of yourself in some way, as that is usually my goal. My own mind feels disorganized and surreal, so I try to throw things together in ways that reflect that as an attempt to process my own thoughts, and hopefully build a sense of self. Relax and have fun with your crafting time! <3
