Make: Hanging File Folder Floss Organizer

In celebration of this month’s Reuse & [Re]Think Contest, we made this floss organizer out of hanging file folders! For anyone who does needlework, you know how easily your yarn and threads become a tangled mess. Rather than purchasing an expensive organizing system (that, let’s be real, will later be discontinued), create your own with materials that have been around forever! This system is easy to maintain, and when you need new “cards”, you can get two out of a single file folder for just 5¢ at ACR!

Supplies:

  • Hanging File Folders

  • Scissors

  • Hole Punch

  • Plastic Tabs (optional)

  • File Holder (optional)

Instructions:

1. Cut your hanging file folder approximately 2 inches from the top of the metal hanger on both sides

2. Using a hole punch, punch multiple holes in folder - be careful not to get too close to the bottom edge, otherwise, your thread could rip the hole. (Pro tip: I used the pre-made slots for the plastic tabs as a guide for where to punch the holes and it worked beautifully!)

3. Choose how you want to organize your thread and create a labeled plastic tab for them. There are so many ways to do this - by color family, by color number, by project, etc!

4. Voilà! You just created your first card! Create as many more as you’d like, and if you have a file holder, hang them inside it. The one I chose also had a top compartment that is perfect for storing needles, thread snips, and more.
