Q2 Reuse & [Re]Think Winner: Meryl J!

Last quarter, we challenged our community to shell our their creative reuse ideas and reimagine seashells of all kinds! After reviewing all submissions, our panel of judges is excited to congratulate the winner of 2024’s Q2 Reuse & [Re]Think Challenge - Meryl J!

Meryl made some fabulous accesssories, and the judges were impressed with the thoughful beading and cohesive color designs.

“I made 3 necklaces, using shells, beads, wire, chains, and twine. The shells came from an old decorative basket I got from Corpus Christi. I used nail polish to add some color and shimmer to the shells. The twine was from ACR.” - Meryl

How gorgeous are these?! One judge in particular loved the use of nail polish to achieve the iridescent shimmer. We hope you enjoy your ACR gift card, Meryl!

Work depicts an ocean beach scene with turtles hatching. For this piece, she used: construction paper, felt, hot glue, rocks, googly eyes, and of course, seashells!

Alcohol ink, sometimes decoupage, and tiny found objects and embellishments to repurpose oysters shells into pretty dishes. They can be used as bedside table storage for rings, or can be decorative objects.

I like to make mini quilts which are like scrapbook pages and have special meaning to me. This one was started in a Bird Collage Workshop taught by Lisa Thorpe for the Chisholm Trail Quilt Guild. I made it “mine” by printing a photo (fabric sheets for inkjet printers purchased at ACR) from our Florida vacation of the palm tree at our Airbnb and choosing a bird that is native to Florida, Scrub Jay. The 11x14 quilt is designed to fit in a shadow box and I was able to attach them to the quilt using nylon thread. The dot fabric which I purchased at ACR are dots of feathers which was perfect for this project. The fabrics were attached with Misty Fuse and project was machine quilted.
