Meet Karolina Zuniga (she/her), Reuse Specialist and ceramist icon! This month, we’re shining the light on this very awesome and hardworking member of the ACR team, and we can’t wait for you to read all about her. Continue reading below to learn more about this amazing human being and what brought her to ACR!

How did you find Austin Creative Reuse?

As an art major, purchasing materials for class was quite expensive. To save  money, I actively sought out more affordable options. Given my limited budget as a college student, I was determined to find lower-cost supplies. That led me to discover ACR, an invaluable resource for reasonably priced art materials.

What’s your favorite part about working at ACR?

One thing I love about working at ACR is the wonderful team I get to collaborate with every day. I also appreciate the opportunity to find materials at lower prices, which is a huge perk. Interacting with our community of regular customers creates a great sense of connection and camaraderie.

How’d you end up as a reuse specialist at ACR?

I had been following ACR on Instagram for a while. When I first visited the store, I immediately felt a strong connection and knew it would be a great fit. Coincidentally, I was looking for a job at the time, and ACR had an open position.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve found donated to ACR?

Recently, we received a diverse shipment of ceramic molds, including ducks, clowns, frames, etc. Examining the unique assortment always intrigues me. I enjoy envisioning how past artisans employed these molds and speculating creative ways I could use them myself. Unpacking the molds makes for a fascinating experience as I consider the potential uses for each distinctive piece.

Are you an artist, crafter, or maker? What mediums do you work with?

Although exploring diverse creative mediums and making meaningful gifts for loved ones accurately represents my passions, I struggle to readily identify myself as an artist or crafter. Some mediums I enjoy creating include embroidery, painting, and any other creative endeavors that capture my interest on social media.  Additionally, I hold a bachelor's degree in studio art focused on sculpture and ceramics. Looking ahead, I aspire to transform this passion into a fulfilling career.

What do you do when you’re not working at ACR/what other hobbies do you have?

Outside of ACR, I love being creative! Architectural design is my passion, and I'm always working on plans for my dream home for fun. Taking related classes is on my to-do list. I also enjoy discovering music from around the world, which provides a fascinating window into new languages and cultures. Similarly, I like watching international films and shows. Quality time with family, traveling, learning new crafts, spending time with pets chiquita and bebe, trying new restaurants, reading creative books, taking classes at the library, and attending free events also bring me joy.

Are you from Austin? And if not, where are you from?

I was born in a city in Texas bordering Mexico. I lived in Mexico for the first five years of my life before my family began moving frequently due to my father's military service, which took us to North Carolina and Missouri. After he completed his service, we returned to my birth city, but relocated to Austin just six months later when I was 11. Since then, I've moved between my birthplace, Denton, and Austin for school. But for the past two years, I have settled back in Austin, which feels like home.
