Staff Spotlight: Sal Miller
Each month, we highlight one of the incredible folks that makes the magic of Austin Creative Reuse come to life. For December, it's Processing Reuse Specialist, Sal Miller (they/them)! Even prior to working for ACR, Sal was a volunteer and we like to think that we’ve grown up together over the years. We’re incredibly lucky to be able to call them part of the ACR family, and are in awe of all their talents! Keep reading to learn more about them.
How did you find Austin Creative Reuse?
My mother is a long time volunteer, so it just seemed natural to get sucked in to the world of ACR!
What’s your favorite part about working at ACR?
The variety of people who donate, volunteer, shop and work at ACR. It's wonderful to be around like-minded, crafty people.
How’d you end up as a Reuse Specialist at ACR?
I worked at ACR for a few summers during school, and loved it so much I came back after graduation!
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve found donated to ACR?
A very old pH meter, the same model used as an ESP machine prop in the original Ghostbusters.
Are you an artist, crafter, or maker? What mediums do you work with? What kinds of arts and crafts do you like to do?
I'm a crafter! Primarily a sewer, I'm very into Renaissance festivals so I make clothing and accessories for all my friends and then drag them with me to Faire.
What do you do when you’re not working at ACR/what other hobbies do you have?
I have too many hobbies! Sewing, leatherwork, chainmail, candle making, doll making, crochet, and many more! This number has definitely increased since I started working at ACR, it's very easy to pick up new interest and hobbies when everything is so affordable!
Do you have any children or pets?
I have a 15 year old, 1 eared, scraggly old man of a cat who looks very mean but is the friendliest cat on the block, named Mooch.
Are you from Austin? If so, tell us about your experience here! If not, where are you from and what brought you here?
Born and raised in Austin! Love it here, there's always so much going on, and new people to meet.
