Artist Spotlight: Minerva Torres
Every month, we highlight amazing artists in our reuse community. This October, ACR has the privilege of spotlighting Minerva Torres from Bellas Crafts who most recently helped with this year’s Dia de los Muertos Ofrenda installation in our very own community space! Learn more about Minerva and why she loves teaching and sharing her vibrant Mexican heritage in this interview!
When did you start working as an artist?
I began working as an artist in 2020 starting with small canvases during the pandemic. I found painting enjoyable and decided to purchase additional materials, including wood hearts, better brushes, and more acrylic paint.
Which aspect of creating is your favorite?
I love teaching because it involves making things I'm passionate [about], and I get to share how they are made.
Where do you get your inspiration?
My art is deeply inspired by my rich Mexican culture, especially from San Luis Potosí. All my creations reflect the beauty of my country, allowing me to share a bit of my culture with others.
What is your preferred way to engage with your audience?
I love connecting with my audience during all the events that I have, whether it's a pop-up or a class. It's a great opportunity for them to see the finished pieces I've created and to hear about the inspiration behind my work.
How does reuse play a part in your creativity?
Lately, reusing materials has really sparked my creativity! This month, I've been busy crafting tassels and have bought over 30 packs of yarn for the project. But it’s not just the yarn; I’ve also discovered some ribbon, rhinestones, and pillow stuffing. In fact, around 65% of these tassels are made from recycled materials sourced from ACR.
What compels you to donate to ACR?
I often find myself buying supplies for my projects that I [will] make someday, but I never end up making. Donating these craft items to ACR makes me really happy knowing they’ll be put to good use in creating wonderful projects.
Do you have a favorite ACR find? How did you use it?
I have a lot of favorite finds but my top 3 are…
Cardstock paper: Made colorful paper flowers
Silhouette machine: learned a new program to do my custom items
Wood hearts: paint[ed] them, and turned them into earrings
