Staff Spotlight: Sal Miller
We’re excited to shine a spotlight on our new Volunteer Coordinator, Sal Miller! A multi-talented crafter and longtime member of the ACR community, Sal will be taking the helm of our Volunteer Team, where they will lead the Core, Community, and Group Volunteer Programs. You may know them from their previous work on the Processing Team, behind the counter of Batreuse’s Emporium, and as our Saturday volunteer group leader, so they will likely be a familiar face to many. You may also have seen them in last year’s Reuse on the Runway fashion show, where they designed and modeled a clown costume made entirely from neckties, which was later featured in the Dougherty Arts Center show, Reuse on the Runway: The Exhibit. Catch them on the runway again next month in the fifth installment of Reuse on the Runway: A Night of Fashion, Cosplay & Drag (tickets are on sale now)! Read on to learn more about Sal and their enthusiasm for creative reuse and the ACR community.
What’s your favorite part about working at ACR?
The people!! Everyone at ACR, staff, volunteers, donors, and customers, are all so wonderful.
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve found donated to ACR?
Human Teeth!
Are you an artist, crafter, or maker? What mediums do you work with? What kinds of arts and crafts do you like to do?
I am a crafter of all trades, but my favorite is sewing! I mainly make costumes, and am partial to historical costuming and clowns. I love the renaissance faire and make many trinkets and accessories for faire as well!
What do you do when you’re not working at ACR/what other hobbies do you have?
Cooking, baking, hiking, trivia, and reading! I just finished reading all the books in Brandon Sanderson's “Cosmere” and NEED to talk to people about it.
Do you have any children or pets?
I have a 17 year old cat named Mooch! He looks like if a necromancer was raising a cat from the dead and gave up halfway through. Sweetest cuddle bug ever that guy is.
Are you from Austin? If so, tell us about your experience here! If not, where are you from and what brought you here?
Born and raised in Austin, Texas! I love this city and all the people in it.
