Austin Area Quilt Guild x ACR Collaboration: Gift of Quilting - Machine Bind your Quilt with a little help from Elmer!

  • Austin Creative Reuse 2005 Wheless Lane Austin, TX, 78723 United States (map)

ACR is thrilled to be hosting a series of free classes taught by the Austin Area Quilt Guild!

Attach and finish quilt bindings with your machine. Unless you just like to watch a whole lotta TV, there is no reason to wear out your hands sewing down a binding.

In this 3-hour workshop for the knowledgeable quilter, participants will machine bind a baby-sized quilt.  You will learn to prepare the quilt, make the binding using rotary cut fabric strips, attach the binding to the quilt, and finish it with a decorative or plain stitch.

AAQG member Karen Alexander will teach this easy way to bind, which she now uses on every quilt she makes. A guild member since 2006, Karen recently retired from her 17-year tenure managing the SVP (Singer Viking Pfaff) Worldwide's Gallery Store at the Arborwalk in Austin where she taught sewing and quilting to thousands.

Class Fee:  $ FREE

You will need to bring:

Sewing Machine with accessories, power cord, foot control, and presser feet that help you sew straight.

Basic Sewing Supplies: scissors, machine needles, thread, seam ripper, straight pins/clips.  A Topstitch, Quilting, or Denim size 90 machine needle and regular sewing thread in a complementary or contrasting color are recommended.

One bottle of Elmer's Washable School Glue (white).

Cutting Mat, rotary cutter, and ruler.

One quilted, UNTRIMMED baby size quilt and a yard of fabric for the binding.  Quilts that need binding for the guild's charity Baby Bundles project will be available with binding fabric if you don't have a suitable sized quilt ready for the class.

The guild will provide irons and ironing stations.
