Staff Spotlight: Hazel Mass

Meet Hazel (she/her), a Reuse Specialist at Austin Creative Reuse and this month’s staff spotlight! In this interview, we chat with Hazel about her journey to ACR, her favorite things about working here, and get to check out some of her incredible interior design skills.

How did you first discover Austin Creative Reuse (ACR)?

I started visiting ACR in 2017 when my mom was the creative director of a small school co-op. I’d tag along with her and loved exploring all the unique knickknacks. I've been a regular visitor ever since!

What’s your favorite part about working at ACR?

I love seeing all the interesting and unique items that come through every day. Plus, I get to work with an amazing team, and I’m proud to be part of an organization that cares deeply about our environment and creating a sustainable future.

How did you become a Reuse Specialist at ACR?

A friend introduced me to Kallie, who works in processing, and she mentioned they were hiring. I had applied a few months earlier but there weren't any open positions at the time. So, I applied again and got an interview—and here I am!

What’s the most interesting item you’ve seen donated to ACR?

Either a full mouse skeleton or a retainer mold suspended on a long spring—both were pretty memorable!

Are you an artist, crafter, or designer? What mediums do you work with?

Right now, my main creative outlet is interior design. I love curating cohesive spaces filled with unique pieces, especially ones with bright colors, interesting textures, and dynamic elements. I recently moved into a new place and am still working on perfecting the space!

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working at ACR?

I enjoy making collages, and lately, I’ve been experimenting with tattooing—just for fun, not professionally!

Are you from Austin?

Yes, I was born and raised here in Austin!

This decor is AMAZING, wouldn’t y’all agree? Thank you, Hazel, for being a valued member of the ACR team with your dazzling smile and superior customer service. Join us next month when we get to know another member of our awesome staff!
