Artist Spotlight: Amruta Ponkshe

Every month, we highlight one of the amazing artists in our reuse community.

This month, ACR has the privilege of spotlighting Amruta Ponkshe, an actor, poet, and sewist who utilizes over 90% reuse materials in her zero waste business, Badami Bags, located in Round Rock. She sources upholstery samples from ACR and pairs them with recycled climbing rope to create specially-designed bags for climbers or anyone who appreciates a sturdy and well-crafted bag. You may have seen her fabulous designs walking down the runway at this past September’s Reuse on the Runway show or at her booth at last weekend’s Holiday Reuse Art Market!

Learn more about Amruta and how she incorporates reuse materials into her sewing practice in this interview!

When did you learn to sew and how did you start sewing using recycled materials?

As a kid, I was always intrigued by sewing machines because of the rhythmic, almost hypnotic movement of treadle machines that were popular in India in the 80s.

I didn't learn sewing then, mostly because I was so intimidated to ask someone to teach me.

Over 8 years ago, as a new mom-to-be living in Austin, I decided to sew my first quilt, by hand using beautiful fabrics I found while browsing through ACR's shelves. I soon realised what a futile endeavor it was, and promptly returned to ACR to buy a new-to-me sewing machine, all the while reminding myself that if the hobby doesn't stick, I could donate back the machine and fabrics.

That impulse buy resulted in me creating several baby clothes, gifts for friends and family, and over the years I've created a small but well loved business ‘Badami Bags’ selling bags to the loyal climbing community in Austin and surrounding areas. I teach introductory sewing classes to students of all ages.

Do you have other creative hobbies?

I'm an actor and a poet.

Which aspect of creating is your favorite?

Though it isn't evident in the moment, the journey from idea to finished product is my favorite aspect.

Where do you get your inspiration?

From everywhere and serendipity has a way of working things in your favor, if you believe in it.

What is your preferred way to engage with your audience?

I like to make social media posts and videos. However, there is no substitute for in-person events. I love to sell at outdoor markets on good weather days.

As an actor/ poet, I'm the happiest when I'm performing and when my audience is invested in and benefits from what I have to say.

How does reuse play a part in your creativity?

Badami Bags is a Zero Waste Sewing Studio located in Round Rock.

I sew all my bags and create with over 90% upcycled materials:

  • Upholstery samples (mostly from ACR) for strong bags

  • Retired climbing rope for durable bag handles and straps

  • Z Bags (expandable storage bags) are made from upcycled tents

  • 10% new - I use new zippers, thread and hardware

Do you ever donate materials to ACR? If so, what compels you to donate?

I've donated fabric, toys, stationery items to ACR if I've outgrown their use or if they are going to just take up more shelf space and never get utilized in my crafting.

Do you have a favorite ACR find? How did you use it?

Upholstery fabric samples are easily my favorite ACR find! I love getting books, especially of old and colourful samples.

Where can we find out more about your work?

I post a lot of my makes on my Instagram account @badamibags. My poetry and other adventures can be found at my IG account @millennial_mom16.
